For me there is too much randomness in the dishing out of cards to be able to read much into it.
Morever the bald statistic of a yellow or red doesn't tell you what it is for. It could be spitting at a player or waving an imaginary card or falling over too easily in the box.
Sometimes a tackle that puts a player out of action isn't even punished.

Out of interest, Colin, why is the listing of yellow cards an important part of a match report? I suppose if several are shown to one team it may suggest poor discipline on their part or to both a rather fussy ref, but it’s not a statistic which is paramount to me.

It can show effort AND how far a team is willing to go to win.

But do the best teams pick up the most yellow cards?

No! Good teams to not have to result heavy tactics.
