How does this defence compare with others?

The team are rightly being praised for some great defensive performances this season - just 29 goals conceded in 34 matches, with an average of 0.85 per match. I've had a look through the archives to see how this compares with previous eras...
High scoring games were the norm in the first half of the 20th century and we had to wait until 1968/69 for the first average of less than 1/game. There have been 11 seasons since then when we have achieved this and the current crop presently lie in 7th position with 8 games to play. The 6 better defences based solely on goals conceded/game were as follows (with some prominent keepers and defenders and our final league position)
1989/1990 0.67 Jim Preston, Tony Ricketts, Dave Palmer, Paul Stevens 2nd
2006 /2007 0.69 Paul Evans, Matt Coupe, Chris Holland, Gethin Jones, Jim Rollo, Sekani Simpson 1st
1976 /1977 0.71 Ken Allen, Sir Richard Bourne, Nigel Ryan, Martyn Rogers, Glyn Broom, Paul Gover 4th
1977 /1978 0.76 DITTO 1st
2005 /2006 0.79 Paul Evans, Matt Coupe, Chris Holland, Gethin Jones, Jim Rollo, Sekani Simpson 2nd
1980 /1981 0.84 Chris Ogden, Stuart Taylor, Tony Ricketts, Paul Morrell 6th (conceded just 8 goals at TP!)
If Clarke, Cundy, Strakes & co can concede no more than 6 goals in the remaining 8 games then 7th place in the club's history is assured - and if they can keep 8 clean sheets they will be second!

Impressive research. Were they all over a 42 game season? I recall the early Alliance /Conference years were less.

They were all over 42 games except the 38 in 80/81.
The worst season defensively was 55/56 when we conceded 107 in the 42 game season, the only time we have exceeded a ton. We finished bottom of the Southern League one place below Merthyr. We were level on points but goal average separated us...
Merthyr 52 127 = 0.41
City 43 107 = 0.40
Had it been on goal difference we would have finished above them.
