City players day jobs

Post by Roy D Hacksaw on Wed Oct 07, 2015 11:27 am

Just doing a little research for a possible future project, and I was wondering if between us we knew what all the City players did for day jobs.

I know we've got a fair few fitness coaches and sports trainers among the ranks, but what else do we have?

The programme this week tells me that Kington works in a flower warehouse, and I believe that Simmo works in a bank and Pratty's a plumber - but do we have any more interesting professions among the ranks to the best of anyone's knowledge?

Sorry, but I can't stand this approach to players. They are footballers, full-stop, and it makes no difference to fans what other jobs they do. The BBC always tries to find out if Grantley Dicks is a fork-lift truck driver, etc. It's nothing to do with football, and I think that it is very condescending.

The worst is when tv features a non league club in the cup and we get the usual teacher, fitness coach, plumber rubbish.

I've no idea about the present crop, Roy, but in the past we've had a goalkeeping coach who was a grave digger and the legendary Mike Denton worked at Victoria Park (on the horticulture side, not selling ice creams).

Chris Allen is a chef.

It's something I'm not keen on either. It's the same on 'talent' shows when there's the whole 'in my spare time I stack shelves in Sainsbury's, but I can also sing quite well'. It's as if it is absolutely staggering that they can do both.

I understand that when mainstream media covers football at our level the whole 'main job' thing comes over as condescending but I always think it is interesting to find out what job our players have. No different to being interested in what anyone I know slightly does for a living.

Andy Watkins is a lecturer/teacher isn't he?

Matt Coupe is a po.. (actually probably best not to go there!)

I can remember during Relaunch Week Rob Skidmore said on the Ken Loach documentary something along the lines of "I work for the Ministry of Defence...although I'm not technically allowed to say that".

Nicky Brooks was also in some sort of well-paid job I believe and was quite well spoken, a contrast to the way he charged around the pitch, throwing himself into challenges.

So what are you doing, or would that get you into Skidmore territory? Wink

Just running through a few ideas for something that might have been a bit different to the usual angle...

Roy is one of those Tax dodgers at the moment or full time education as he calls it.

Considering the wages mentioned on the other thread, I am surprised they do anything else.

Apparently wingers at Sutton with no day job and a young family to provide for get paid well enough to cover it... Shocked
