Wages in National League South Empty Wages in National League South

I got talking to a couple of substitute subs at the recent Larkhall v Havant cup game. By substitute subs, I mean the players who weren't even good enough to be on the bench and who had to watch the game from the sidelines like the rest of us, even though they were in full kit.

When asked how much Havant's players were paid, the two players had a brief chat amongst themselves and then said about £850 a week ! They said that most of the players were essentially full-time on that, as hardly any had other sources of income.

If Havant and Waterlooville players are paid an average of £850 a week, then football really is eating itself.

I was watching us play at Basingstoke a few years ago. The dad of one of the Basingstoke players said Eastleigh had been sniffing around for his son to join them. They were willing to pay him over a grand a week.

He probably wouldn't have been a regular. He didn't go in the end, something to do with where he lived/work etc.

Going by Havant's start to the season, if those figures are true they need to bring in some cheaper, hungrier players!

Not really that surprising  quite few seasons ago even, i recall there were rumours  that some of our own players were on a good few hundred quid certainly top 400-500, always denied mind you.
Footballers and politicians alike , always squeezing the pot dry.

A Bath City Director told me that Paul Sales of Salisbury was on £700 per week in 2005-2006 Southern Premier League.  pale

I have little doubt that now there are many players in Conference South on £1k+ a week, full time pay that most people can only dream of.

Given the level of spectator support at these clubs then this kind of money makes absolutely no sense to anyone. You are talking about £38K for one player. What is a club like ours total budget?

Does anyone really know how much their colleagues are on?
I have absolutely no idea how much any of mine get.

I'm sure I read Matt Tubbs was on £1.5k/week at Salisbury (before the first financial meltdown) so I'm not surprised to hear the figures, not surprised doesn't mean I agree with them, I don't.

Seem to remember Chris Zebroski was on crazy money at Eastleigh as well. Madness, but I'm not sure what clubs can do to stop it, as if we finished rock bottom by only paying the wages we think we should to players, none of us would be happy.

Perhaps an agreement between clubs to pay a maximum of £x/week, but I assume that'd break a whole host of labour laws, plus be nigh on impossible to get agreement on.

Interesting thread - especially when I have see our management assert that our players are among the lowest paid in the National South.
Does anybody have any real info on what our wage bill is? I mean hard facts rather than "I heard a bloke say..."
Presumably, published accounts of a limited company provide this sort of info?
Can you tell I am not a finance person?

I think the minimum requirement for a set of accounts would require the club to specify the total annual amount paid in wages. There won't necessarily be a breakdown shown in any publicly available accounts to show anyone who has been paid by the club besides players.
That's my educated guess.

Exactly right. Wages are shown as a lump sum. You could work out what the maximum amount per player is - total wages ÷ number of squad members - but that is it.

Well, yes, but then you would have to assume that there are non-playing staff wages in there as well so that figure would be the maximum that the players wages could possibly be (and probably aren't).
