Will be interesting to see how he starts the season - almost half of it is played before the 1st test match! - I thought it was stupid not to include him in the original Ashes squad and it was lunacy not to send him out to replace Trott. Hopefully the latter will come again, but Compton deserves another chance.

No...but comrades favourite  tongue cricket compo, 20/20, is not on TV so everyone is reading the same reports; not a lot to comment on after the Australia tour  pale  debacle.

Pleased for him, but wonder if it's a couple of years late as he never really got into his stride last summer. I suppose his 149 in the thrashing of Yorkshire late in the season made him the obvious go to after yet more failures for Bell. I trust we've seen the last of Rashid for some time...

England have said Hales will open, will they go Compton or someone else at 3? Presumably they'd like to keep Root at 4 given he's the best batsman in the world at the moment (I think he's still top...).

With Hales opening, Compton could be facing the new ball very early and Root will hopefully live up to the hype. I fear SA are going to put this summer's Ashes into perspective.
