here's a breakdown of the average number of points the team won for each player who started in league matches this season. the 1st number shows the average points, the 2nd the number of appearances he made. obviously wilson's and moore's positions are unreliable as they started only 5 matches between them and ever presents like mellor and gallinagh end up round the middle as their score is determined by the team's average. but it does give a way of comparing the effectiveness of certain players. interesting that watkins scores very slightly higher than pratt from the same number of matches. and yes, i know that it doesn't take into account factors like the quality of opponents faced.

I think in the first half of the season the only time Watkins was on the losing side in the league was in games against Eastleigh.

good job you put in theproviso about Moore because it looks like Moore is a better keeper than Mellor.

At one stage I had seen Moore concede two goals having not made a single save and only faced one shot on goal.

Clearly stats aren't everything. or even anything.

At one stage this year I had not been on the losing side for four months but I hazard that none of my fellow players would say it was down to me. I think they would say despite me.

Yes I agree that you can use stats to prove just about anything. For example, could most of those below the dotted line be elsewhere come August?

Can't see Allen or Mellor being released. Chris has been fantastic towards the latter end of the season. But I wouldn't be surprised if none of the others were still here in August.

Same here. And apart from Moore and Wilson, I'd expect everyone above the line to be retained. You see, my stats could save the club a lot of time!

I don't suppose any player will be "released" as such, as their contract will have expired, so they will be free agents. In that case it won't be in the power of the club to keep them, even if they want to.
Re Mellor, I was concerned about that comment a couple of months back where he said he was frustrated by the lack of progress he can make without a goalkeeping coach. He may consider going somewhere where there is one.

I think the club retains the player's registration until something is agreed, e.g., could be kept on as non contract.

well i'm no goalkeeping coach, but surely his one weakness for our level is his distribution. so, jason, aim for our opponents' goal and the ball may just end up on the pitch!

Could Mellor not train with a local non league team, Bristol Rovers for example?

I would worry that he might show what a good keeper he was and they might tempt him away. Much better to find something at a comparable level. Or an old friend of the club willing to help out at a discount.
